Many of the download sites add undesireable software (toolbars, virus protection.) to the install and if you're not careful to deselect the software it will install it. Be careful if you download it from other sites. You can download it for free at MajorGeeks. Sketchup is a 3D image vector graphics editor. Google Sketchup is quite a bit more complex than most vector graphics editors but that's because it can do so much more. If you can find it for less than $50, it's a good deal in my opinion. I began using Macromedia Flash (v5.0) about 10 years ago and like it better than any of the free 2D vector graphics editors. There are quite a few vector graphics editors. That means that you could draw it to make it fit on your computer screen and then blow it up to fit on a billboard and the quality would remain the same. Vector images are typically infinitely scalable. You can see how the line quality remained the same for both groups.
The image below was created with a vector editor. You can see that the line has become much more pixilated (jaggy). The 3 lines on the left are the originals. Bitmap images typically cannot be scaled up without losing significant quality. Previously, it was stated that programs like MS Paint and Paint.NET are bitmap editors. The 'curves' tool is very useful if you have a photo that's slightly over or under exposed. There are various select tools to allow you to select just the part of the photo that you want to edit or you can use no selection and edit all parts of the photo at once. In the next two images, you can see that both the x-y axes (left/right-up/down) orientation has changed as well as the z-axis (top/bottom) orientation.įor photo touchup, Paint.NET has virtually anything that you need. You can also move the layers up and down or merge them is desired. With Paint.NET, if objects are drawn on top of each other on one layer, it functions just like MS Paint but when you place items on different layers, you can move them without affecting the objects on other layers. With MS Paint, all objects are drawn on top of each other. One of the best features is the ability to put the various objects on different layers.

If you draw a second line of a different color directly on top of the first line, it will change the same pixels to the new color. When you draw a line, it changes the color of the pixels on that line to the color that you selected. The biggest problem is that Paint is nothing more than a bitmap editor. Many people use it to draw diagrams that they send me and the diagrams are so bad that they're essentially useless. MS Paint is the weakest of any of the programs of its type, as far as I know. From my experience, it appears that few people know that there are better image editing and drawing programs than Microsoft's Paint.
